Meditation Has Many Benefits

Meditation is a practice that usually involves sitting still and quieting, or at least trying to quiet, the mind. The mind is constantly producing thoughts that are all fighting for our attention and attempting to control the way we live our lives. According to many who have studied this phenomenon, if we can just quiet the mind and reduce the onslaught of all these thoughts, we can experience much more peace and happiness.

Greater physical health can result as well from relieving the mental stresses and anxieties of daily life. Many illnesses are caused from our own minds, and if we can keep the mind calm and peaceful, we will be much more healthy for it. It costs nothing to meditate, but it can provide a whole laundry list of benefits, both physically and mentally.

Probably the most basic form of meditation involves sitting by oneself in a quiet room and focusing the mind on a single thought, or paying attention only to one's breathing as the breaths go in and out. This sounds like a simple thing to do, but ask anyone who has tried it, and they will tell you that it is easier said than done. After several minutes the mind starts to wander, and the thoughts come rushing back in before you realize what has happened.

The transcendental meditation movement of the past advised people to hum the mantra "om" or "aum" while meditating, to attempt to focus the mind on one subject and prevent the scattered thoughts from occuring. Other groups and religions suggest concentrating on an object like a candle or something similar to focus the mind.

It seems the mind just isn't naturally built to only think single thoughts at a time. According to the proponents of the Release Technique, the mind does not always have our best interests at heart, so we must mentally take control and release all these extranneous thoughts, especially the negative ones. In this way our lives will become happier and more fulfilling.

It is pretty much universally agreed, however, that the more one can quiet their mind, the closer one can get to nirvana, enlightenment, beingness, mindfulness, or whatever word you choose to describe the absolute quieting of the mind. This state brings one to the ultimate in relaxation, and supposedly a higher state of conscousness, self-awareness, and peace of mind.

Many of the great religions of the world advocate meditating to reach the highest state of holiness. Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism all advocate some form of meditation. Christianity and Islam use what they call prayer, a somewhat different form of meditation, to focus the mind on the Divine, on God, on Allah, or whatever deity they believe in.

More modern approaches to mediation use electronic means to achieve the different beneficial levels and states of brain waves that traditional methods induce. Methods such as Holosync and The Meditation Program use a technology called binaural beats, to produce the physical changes in the brain that allow people to become more in tune with their inner self and the universal energies around them. Of course hypnotism is among the techniques used to quiet the mind and achieve greater levels of relaxation and self-awareness.

Whatever way it is done, meditation has been used for thousand of years, and its healing and relaxation benefits are well known. It has long been considered the way to enlightenment or connection with the universal mind that controls the universe. If nothing else, it is certainly a good way to unwind and release the stresses of one's life and help to rid the body of stress-related illnesses.
